Loved the movie, Bry. From the 1952 race, I think. Frank Shuter in George Smith's Allard, Smith himself in the GeeCeeEss and I think Ron Roycroft in the XK120

And of course McMillan and the Jackson Special were winners of the first Ohakea race, the 1950 NZ Grand Prix

I said on another thread that I'd ID the cars in the grid shots. I've made a note to do it within the next two or three hours

Your first pic is from 1956, and you have it correctly identified (though I haven't checked it car by car)

The second pic is 1955, picking up from V Shuter on the front row, McDougall in Row 2 and Gilroy in Row 3

You last picture has the car right, but that's not Morrie Proctor with it

Ohakea - other stuff and some early programmes - thanks to Bruce Dyer " Spgeti "

Post by Roger Dowding »

Bry3500,

Haven't really seen this thread before, but interested in Ohakea - attended the Reunion Meeting in 1983, and have some old programmes - courtesy of Spgeti...
In the the listing posted above is Don Tilsley - who with Herb Gilroy - had a Team called " Ecurie Drambuie " - Don in the Singford, one of several and Herb Gilroy in an Austin A40 Special - he had a few other cars.
Not Ohakea but a photo of the Singford Mk 3 and Gilroy A40 Spl at Muriwai in 1955 - from Don's archives.

Ohakea 1953 and other events ..

Ohakea and the " Singford "
Don Tilsley in his Singford - the Mark II version at Ohakea- same photos appears in the Graham Vercoe book Historic Racing Cars of New Zealand noted as 1952.
Don states it was 14th March 1953 and had a short story with the photo, " Don broke the steering arm on lap 24 of the 25 lap trophy race and was a DNF but he did get 10 pounds for completing 23 laps-was running second at the time "
Singford #032 Ohakea Trophy Race 14 March 1953. D.N.F Don 24th lap of 25 holding 2nd place broke.jpg
Tahunanui -the Beach races - There is a great photo collection on the events that appear in the " Nelson Photo News " - from late 1950' into the 1960's - well worth a look online.

I actually downloaded a lot of the pages - have never attended Beach racing, but my Uncle and Dad did back in the late 1940's Orewa and Muriwai, into the early - mid 1950's.

Here is a page from the " Nelson Photo News "

Ohakea, The Specials..and the programmes ..

Post by Roger Dowding »

Been going over the Ohakea events as Don Tilsley ran his Singford Special for several years 1953 1954 and 1955, In 1954 the Edwards Special also ran / was entered,I should say, in the Sports car Handicap Race 2 and the main event the trophy race Race 10.

There is quite a bit on the Ohakea events - entry lists from " sergent " and programme extracts on the thread entitled
" 1953 Edwards Special " as K W Martin was trying to find out more on the car.

Go to this thread #2618..

" http://www.theroaringseason.com/showthr ... ds-Special "

Don Tilsley has sent me information on the Singford including many events he entered it, mainly around Auckland with Northern Sports Car Club and also Auckland Car Club, but his trips to Ohakea must have been great even though he had a couple of DNF's.

Have the programmes for Ohakea for 1951 and 1954, plus copies of covers of other years.
First event was in 1949 and they went into the 1960's and then there were reunion meetings starting in 1982.

The 1954 Programme - thanks to " Spgeti ".

Sorry Don, thought I had it but only the 1954 issue.

I remember the very long, rubber burning sweeper back section and Ron Roycroft coming past in the Bug with rubber dust streaming off the rear wheels. The car tended to skip from one large concrete section to the next. With the markers far between, the back section required a certain amount of navigation and cars tended to come at you from unexpected directions. LOL.

Allan, sent you a PM.
Also saw your comment about Mt Wellington - will pass on Don Tilsley's notes about the Track. I knew very little about it.
Turns out is not at the Mountain itself..

Will put the details on the NSCC thread.

Roger
