It is obvious that even for champions that self catering was the order of the day in those times

"Famous" is very subjective and depends on one's exposures, country, toys etc
In my humble opinion the three most famous transporters are:
1......The Ecurie Ecosse one shown above in post #19. So many of us had the Corgi model when we were kids (wist I still had it)
Was my first exposure to racing. The beautifully restored model shown at events like Goodwood revival sets the memory going.

2......The Ferrari 3 car open transporters as shown above in post # 37. Here a model but much later than the Corgi and for serious collectors only. I don't think anyone had one as a toy. Were famous because seen carrying such beautiful cars in exotic locations.

3......The Mercedes Renntransporter as shown above in post # 20. Described as "the fastest race car transporter in the world".
Made famous by its replica and the models of it. I will describe further in a separate post.

I believe the BRM transporter shown is very similar to those used by the English F1 teams of the time such as Cooper, Brabham, Lotus etc and is not "famous" by itself.

Mercedes Renntransporter



One of the more famous transporters in motor racing
“Renn” is German for race, so its title in English would be race transporter.
However it was not a transporter in the traditional sense. It was really an “emergency delivery vehicle”, used for quick trips back to factory for damaged race cars, or from the factory for replacements. All it carried was the car.
It has been described as “the fastest race car transporter in the world”.
Its origins date to team manager Neubauer’s desire to have quick transport. As shown in post 50 he introduced the first transporter as prior to that race cars had been driven to circuits.
By the early 1950’s transporters had become much bigger, slow and lumbering.
Neubauer wanted something very fast for use in Europe for the purposes mentioned above.
The Renntransporter was ready in the middle of the 1954 season, for the W196 race car and the 300 SLR sports racer
It only had a very short life in its original purpose, so only limited B/W photos of it.
In June 1955 Mercedes was involved in the large crash into the crowd at Le Mans, which killed 85 spectators, and injured another 150.
Mercedes immediately withdrew from all motor sport, so the Renntransporter became redundant.
At the end of 1955 it did a promotional tour of the US.
It was then intended to exhibit at the Mercedes museum in Munich, but it was realised the combined weight of the Renntransporter and a 300SLR sports racer on it’s back would be too heavy for the museum’s floors.
On the orders of Mercedes boss Uhlenhaut it was scrapped in December 1967.
When Mercedes many years later built a much bigger museum it was decided that a replica of the Renntransporter would be ideal for display.
This was commissioned from a German company, and completed in 1993.
It took 6,000 hours and a reported cost of 1.5 million euros.

Yes it is...but doesn't run the Nissan anymore. I can't remember what motor is in it now.

-......The white Dodge truck. Brian Foley and Laurie Stewart used to have one of these for transporting their two Minis. Could this be it? Tyres on top may be a clue.

The Beechey and McKeown cars never competed as they were late entries and needed other competitors to agree to allow them to compete which wasnt forthcoming.

I always look at the site afterwards to check.

Old Fart why can't you be constructive and assist, rather than just being negative?
You don't answer my queries, so how can I get on "top of photo posting".
I am mererly trying to get it right, with no assistance.

Why is it that NO ONE has advised why I can see my photos on the forum but no one else can ?
I would have thought that by now Old Fart or someone would have responded, just to assist a newcomer.

I see that the problem of posting photos is not unique to this forum. On the Autosport forum (which appears to use similar software) there is a thread which has had over 280 replies since June 2004 of people wanting advice on the frustrating aim of posting photos.
It appears a lot of people give up in disgust and gems of photos remain in albums or drawers never to be seen.

In this forum I have discovered there appears to be two ways of posting photos:
- I have attempted (unsuccessfully I am told) to follow the instructions in FAQ under "How do I upload photos"
- I have also discovered a thread started by Steve Holmes on 20 May 2011 "How to post images"
This advises a different process of going through the "Go Advanced" button

Why two methods, which is better, which is most used?

Does anyone use "Tinypic", which I gather has its faults.

I believe what this forum most needs is an active administrator.
