Who What and Where?
Re: Who What and Where?
#152 was the number Leo Leonard carried on that unusual orange Begg F5000 with the ordinary nose that I think was built from a sports car : maybe it's that car with a different snout ? Doesn't look like Leo at the helm, though...

Re: Who What and Where?
Well, my thoughts based on 3 things helmet, program listing and comments in an annual regarding the 1972/3 Gold Star series regarding 'handling problems' is Neil Doyle and his Begg FM2. I know it ended up with a 'Tyrell-like" nose cone. But thats just a guess

[color="#0000FF"]In no order of preference, Laurence Brownlie, Russell Thompson, Pierre Phillips, Geoff Mardon, Neil Doyle.
Im leaning toward Doyle, but I think I have read a post somewhere from Russell Thompson himself, possibly on this site where he had raced one of the 5000 Begg cars but was not given credit for it. If its Laurence Brownlie its the early Begg Daimler with motor from sports car ( McBegg- oops that's wrong ).... you guys can work it out

Wasn't that the motor from the previous sports car before the McBegg?

Oops, YES my mistake, the motor from the McBegg had tossed its Harmonic Balancer at a Timaru meet on way back from the NZ Land Speed record runs.
Re: Who What and Where?
I don't think it is a FM2 as they had a flat top roll hoop and were as I recall quite slab sided.
Re: Who What and Where?
Beggs across the front row at Ruapuna 1971 : Doyle and Leonard in FM2s, and Mardon in the FM4.
Re: Who What and Where?
Leonard in the Begg I was referring to earlier. Certainly the exhausts look the same.

The Doyle FM2 with 'Tyrell' nose 1972/3
Re: Who What and Where?
I think that is McRae in the GM1 with Duckhams livery at Bay Park.
As I recall Doyle's Tyrell nose was on his Surtees.

Re: Who What and Where?
No that is the Alan Rollinson car that McRea took for a blast as there seemed to be a problem with it.

Re: Who What and Where?
Ok, sorry, made an assumption. Here is Doyle's Begg on the outside of the front row of what I assume to be Ruapuna, round 3 of the 72/3 Gold Star, a change that took place between rounds 1 and 2, I quote from round 2 at Pukekohe 12/11/72 ...while Neil Doyle managed to coax his old FM2, now Tyrell nosed, Begg into third to make it an all-Begg finish.
From round 3 at Ruapuna 19/11/72 ... Neil Doyle's good luck deserted him and the Begg FM2 suffered from chronic handling problems and overheating causing a pit stop and several 'moments'...
and if I had fully read the report from Bay Park 31/12/72
McRae was driving Alan Rollinson's car experimenting with a Tyrell nose in practise and finding all sorts of problems with it and the car generally, as his own car was late arriving for the Tasman Series.

Good stuff, yes I do recall that nose on Doyle's Begg now.
Pretty big crowd in at Ruapuna for a Gold Star meeting !

Re: Who What and Where?
The only hint from Gavin Shaw's photograph was Teretonga, so I looked at the F5000 entry list from 30/1/72 and found Neil Doyle in the FM2 #152
