Looked closely, the gold to me isnt right, and another Cambridge car owner felt the same.
Also there were different car painters involved and no special paint formula- just went off the ciggy packet.
Been told the white is too creamy, yet thats on my car.
I have this time to nail it before the paint goes on

David- you came into the Roaring Season saying your participation level in motorsport was low.
Guess what, you were the right man in the right place and this picture has made you a legend- colour pics of this car are few and far between.
"thought the Monaro the the most worthy car to use it on."- absolutely, especially if you saw it spinning at Wigram.
Give yourself a big pat on the back as this details from this pic definitely helps my restoration.
Just out of curiosity- what are the other 7 pics from Wigram about, do you still have them ?

John,
What is your opinion on the paint colours of the Roger Anderson's BMW on the post # 565 link ?

Ken- I dont think the dark blue on his is the same colour on mine, others look OK.
(Note- the gold on his is more lighter than the Lola T-70)
Though when I can expand Davids pic , dark blue may be the same.- but look at #567 and it is much darker to my eyes. Almost the colour of the sticker on #333
Steve E posted here #301 that he can remember that as a 16 year old the dark blue being Zenith Blue- still trying to find some old Dulux Super Enamel charts.....any leads out there folks?

Dulux used to have a historical listing of old colours and what matches them today. Try Dulux HO in Wellington John.

OK will do that tomorrow.
I tried the other one you suggested in Oct 2013-
-John, Cambridge was owned by British Imperial Tobacco distributed in NZ by that company in Napier
No luck there though

Sadly I don't have many photos. My thinking when I was young was that motor racing photography was all about action shots on the track which required a good camera, telephoto lens, lots of film and developing and none of that stuff came cheap. Consequently I never put much value on taking photos of cars standing still which was all my cheap basic camera was capable of.

What photos I did take I still have so will put them up in the near future.

John - I'm only just over a week away from my 67th birthday and you are the first person who has ever called me a legend (lol).

As for Wigram; some mates and I were on a 3 week camping holiday in the South Island (in a triple carbed Mk 2 Zephyr and my EH Holden) and we made sure we got back to Christchurch in good time for race day. We were in such good time we spent about 3 or 4 hours at the circuit on the friday ( practise day) where there was lots of activity, race cars parked all over the place and heaps of people milling around them. It was really hot too - we were Wellingtonians and unaccustomed to tempertures over about 20 degrees.

So we wandered about and I took photos of various cars when I could get a clear shot. One thing I'm fairly sure of, while we were there I never saw the Monaro. Would have got a shot of it if it had been. It might have turned up after we left - or not practised at all.

All I can remember about race day was standing in a sea of people and not seeing much at all, certainly not the Monaro spinning. Either Wigram wasn't much of a spectator circuit or we just found ourselves in the wrong place.

Our 20 year old neighbour Finn came over this evening and scanned the photos into my computer. When he comes back from racing motorbikes at Taupo this weekend I'll get him to post them up. You might be interested in a 3/4 rear view of the Coppins Camaro in Cambridge colours.
I was watching him doing the scanning and said "I suppose I should learn how to do this myself".
He said "don't bother, you can't teach old dogs new tricks"
That's the trouble with kids today - they've got no respect.

After seeing Davids pic magnified , I got motivated on trying to solve the colour of the big stripe.
One door had been replaced and the passenger door I had sanded and found nothing except white , bronze and factory metallic blue.
So I went to the rear wheel arches where I knew metal overlapped and there was still old paint tucked away under there.
I still have the 2 rear quarters with so many cuts, welds and bog -typical Holden Monaro from then.
I spent about 6 hours levering up the overlap of flared metal on the original guard and eventually found an area that was good.
The more recent flare had welded on where the white paint was and there was Gradys Bronze that hadnt been affected by the welding higher up- the metal just sitting against the old paint no bare metalling or butt weld, just laid it on top and bog everything.I used a glaziers razor to separate the top paint skin- did that sucessfully on rear quarters and rear roof pillar- and eventually found dark blue paint , with white underneath. This was in a area where this stripe would have been. Glad I never threw these rusty stuffed parts away away.
Took the sample to paint place in Penrose , they ID it and gave me a 1 litre sample.
Will be getting spray painter girl to spray up a test panel with the colours end of next week when she returns to paint the inside of the car.
So yes it was a dark blue- dont know its name, but it has been matched.
No gold or light blue as these areas had been destroyed, burnt or sanded

This is what I was working with .
Pic 3- The right rear quarter taillamp section I spent a lot of time carefully peeeling back paint to show the original white, but no other colours there.
Pic 1- this shows the 2 rear quarters at the wheel arch area.
Pic 2- inside of wheel arches. Basically some one cut Bunces massive VW flares off , then welded more metal to make the wheel arch shape.
So where you can see the metal edge is lifted , that the original rear quarter. Thats how badly these wheel arches had been bodgeed.
Fortunately I was able to get right up inside and find the original paint- no one bare metalled it.

Found this Team Cambridge sticker on http://www.cabbagetreecornermedia.com. Sorry about quality but check web site for what appears to be an original.

Some interesting images on this site of Rod Coppins in the Zephyr Corvette on a gravel hillclimb.

Olde proverb- man proposes, God disposes.
A few months ago I was all set to push through.
My plans came to a jarring halt.- so no posts at all for some time.
However, Painter Girl, formerly known as Panelbeater Girl- is continuing her work.
Front A pillar , dash board area and area below that is painted as per original colour,blue/grey in the same places.
Inner cabin is Satin Black as it was.
Parcel tray on this is probably the only one I have seen that hasnt been cut out for speakers.
Firewall and Boot area is next on the list.
I want the interior painting finished before the outside is done.

Looking at the number- 59- and the advertising on the side- K.E.Carter Motors -well known Holden and Chevrolet Agents- should make this BayPark when Terry Allen appeared with his big block Camaro in 1969
