These are two of my favorite race cars being transported.
McLaren M20 at Mosport in 1972.
1970 Boss 302 Trans Am Mustang. (After restoration )

Re: Race Car Transporters of the Past
July 5th weekend. 1970. French F1 Grand Prix at Clermont Ferrand..
The McLaren Team transporter and crew as they prepare for the race after tragically losing Bruce a month earlier.
Dan Gurney, who kindly filled in while Denny was recovering from burnt hands at Indianapolis is at the rear with McLaren M14A # 17.
Denny Hulme had returned to drive the McLaren M 14D-Cosworth # 19.
Tyler Alexander is in the doorway.
The other car on the transporter is a McLaren M7D # 16 with a Alfa Romeo T33. 3.0 V-8 engine driven by Andrea De Adamich.
These were very hard times for the team but they bravely battled on and never gave up.

Re: Race Car Transporters of the Past
I used to dread getting on the school bus at Kiwitahi but I think I was safer then than climbing on board some of these arrangements except the Porsche-Audi transporter !

The number 88 on the silver car is on the same angle as the ramp.
Neat Topolino, and when you see a real road going on they look so tiny.
They are the car version of the Shetland Pony and Shetland Dog

John,
Do you want me to try to contact the # 88 artist to come out and apply his skills to your Monaro ?
You could just park it on an incline in the driveway and he will take it from there !

Re: Race Car Transporters of the Past
It seems VW Kombis were a popular mode of transporter back in the sixties. Perhaps someone can explain why. It would not be for the handling or for speed !.
Just in case you needed a support vehicle.

Ken- In the Hippy era, the Fabulous Furry Freak Brothers turned a Kombi into an Armadillo- I loaned Spagetti the details-looked impressive scuttling along the freeway . We dont need to mention what they were transporting in SoCal

Re: Race Car Transporters of the Past
I think some of these VW transporters were carrying loads a little bit more valuable than the Kombi !
(Imagine finding this unattended in the parking lot ! A Williams FW 07 and a Lotus 49 well protected from the rain !)
(Note how popular VWs are in this photo. )

Or, here is another project.
1952 Studebakers.
Transporter back in the day.
Now crouching in the desert in rattlesnake country.
(Note the rear "suicide door" arrangement )

Re: Race Car Transporters of the Past
Some transportation in the US.
1969 trailer of Dodge Daytonas.
A great team and driver in the 1970s was the Wood Brothers and David Pearson.
This shows the 1973 Ford Mercury Montego always with # 21. Outside their humble shop in Stuart, Virginia.
