The second placed car in the 1969 Tourist Trophy race at Oulton Park. David Pipers Lola T70, complete with spare wheel!

Yes that is David Piper's Lola.
The accident mentioned in the caption was the one that took the life of Paul Hawkins.

Thanks Milan - the results that I accessed didn't have his race number. I was obviously at Oulton Park that day and I remember the shock when everyone heard what had happened to Paul hawkins, who was a regular at the circuit.

Charles,
October 31 1964. Kyalami 9 Hour Race.
Although it was a DNF in the race I imagine Frank Gardner and Paul Hawkins had a lot of fun participating in this John Willment
7 liter Ford Galaxie.

Hi Ken - I think you are probably quite correct. The old Kyalami was a fairly open and fast circuit so I imagine this car would go well round the track! Looks like they are exiting Clubhouse corner.

A general view of Oulton Park in 1969 looking from the main straight (in the foreground) to a John Willment Escort exiting the Cascades with the long descent of the Avenue in the background. Noteworthy that the driver is pushing on as the inside front wheel appears to be off the ground.

I think I took this photo of the Bill Shaw Racing Ford Falcon Sprint driven by Aussie Brian Muir at the 1968 BSCC race at Oulton Park, held on the 18/08/1968. Although only qualifying in P8 Muir came through to win the 19 lap race from the Falcon of Roy Pierpoint.

A photograph I took of Derek Bell sitting in his Ferrari 312 at the 1968 Oulton Park Gold Cup meeting. The little decal on the side with PROVA MO 159 on it is interesting. Its basically a form of manufacturers trade plate. PROVA means 'test-driving', while MO is for Modena, the home district of the Ferrari works. The number is the licence number. Theoretically you could test the car on the public roads.

Taken probably in 1969 at a BSCC meeting. I have not been able to identify the car. Any suggestions?

Charles,
I know Ray Green will correct me if I am wrong but I will say this is a 1954 BRM V16 P 30 Mk II as it does not have the exhaust pipes going back under the car, just short pipes exiting behind the front wheels. Only two of these Mk IIs were built by BRM.

Thanks Gentlemen. I suspected it might be a BRM, but when compared to the original V16 car there were obvious differences, especially in respect to the size and the snakepit of exhaust pipes. I hadn't known that there was a Mk2 version. Incidentally I was at Oulton Park when Jackie Stewart did a demo lap in what was probably a Mk 1 V16. The noise it made was unbelievable! Having said that, I was last night watching a video of Gordon Murray's new T50 supercar at Goodwood. The noise that makes it equally incredible.

A John Willment Mk1 Escort fending off a Falcon Sprint on the straight leading into Knicker Brook at Oulton Park. A BSCC race in either 1968 or 1969.

Denny Hulme on a lap of honour in his winning Sid Taylor Racing entered Lola T70 Chevrolet Mk 3 GT, after winning the 1968 Tourist Trophy at Oulton Park. The car is probably being driven by owner Sid Taylor and there is another driver in the hatch on the other side, presumably second placed driver David Piper or his co-driver Richard Attwood.

This collection just keeps getting better Charles! I'm enjoying this so much.
Out of interest, were you born in England and moved to South Africa, or were you just spending time in England when you took these photos?

Hi Steve - I grew up in the UK until 1970, when I moved to South Africa. I was a regular at Oulton Park in the late 1960's and at Kyalami in the early 1970's. When I emigrated I took a few negatives and prints that I'd made (I had my own darkroom, enlarger, etc at home in the UK) with me. I only came across the haul a couple of months ago when cleaning out the garage, which was fortunate! A lot of Oulton Park negatives are still in the UK, whilst there are a few Kyalami ones that seem to have gone missing. I am going to see if I can get a few of the negatives sent out by my niece. Fingers crossed.
