Keep talking to Scotty - we need to encourage him to come back and bring the Mazda with him.

I second that, see Lost Race Cars thread. I'd like to know where it went.

Thanks for that info. If built by Busby, was it built for IMSA?

Was it the same wave he gave me when I passed him in the Mobil race, fingers seemed to be stuck together.

i have just read most of the ten tenths 320 thread in it there are links to oz website and info on all the Oz JPS cars and 1 of the Busby cars is full space frame and 1 is steel shell car both built by bmw factory
cars raced in USA in IMSA 78 79 ish then sold to Oz and later went back to USA and germany via the UK
there was also a bmw in Oz built in conjunction with Frank Gardner car was eventually broken up parts sold off and the shell was eventually scrapped
thread is 22 pages worth and i read it backwards made more sense to me than reading forward
I often read yr threads here backwards last to first page more educational at times

here is the link get a box of crisps and couple of (warm) beers and read on

I think yer man was using his poetic licence to the max and poss onto valve bounce
you know what Kiwis are like for bragging !!:roll eyes:
he was also excitable on his price at the time £100k ish for a car that needed a full rebuild to use- i offered him half that dunno what he took for it this was around 4-5 years ago now
the man who has bought the car has a few Gp a cars i doubt he will race it more of a collector

Do you know much of its history? Looks like its still wearing the original paint. Its painted in works colours, but its bodywork looks different to the works cars of 1978, which seems to be the only year these cars had turbos and this paint scheme:http://homepage.mac.com/frank_de_jong/Pages/1978%20DRM.html

The car had Canadian stickers on it when I saw it at Whenuapai 15 years ago so I wondered if it was one of the McLaren IMSA cars. Perhaps a sister car to this one, http://www.finecars.cc/en/detail/car/7311/index.html , although the bodywork is a bit different to this also.

Malcolm

Edit: I've had read through some of the ten-tenths thread mentioned above and the history of the car is outlined in Post #128 here: http://www.ten-tenths.com/forum/showthread.php?t=75912&page=9

Steve Holmes wrote:As posted by Bry3500 on the Sandown 1000 thread. What happened to the 3 Aussie BMWs that raced in sports sedans in the 80s?

1) Craven Mild 318i. LHD Floorpanned Turbo Built by Jim Busby to IMSA specs in the USA. Brought out here in early 1980 and made its debut in Rd3 of the Australian Sports Sedan Championship at Amaroo Park with Gricey at the wheel. Raced through 1980. Did not re appear until the 1982 Championship Rd6 with Jim Richards at the wheel under JPS colours. Car now had the boxed guards. This car then ended up being purchased by Molloy and raced by Chris Hones before being passed on to Robin Doherty and then I think on to Rob Burns. It was then sold onto the US. Car is now in Germany or England.

2) JPS 318i. RHD Space frame. Made its debut at Rd1 of the Better Brakes 3.5 series at Amaroo Park in 1981 with Gricey at the wheel under JPS colours. Raced throughout 1981 in the Championship before being sold to Bruce Lynton for 1982 season and then John Brigss for the 1983 season. It was then raced by Grant Munday and then to Richard Gartner. Richard put a rotary in it and raced it in the NSW state series with a black colour scheme. The car ended up in Thailand and apparently is now in New Zealand.

3) JPS IMSA 320i. LHD Floorpanned Jim Busby built car. Was used as show/spares car. Did not race until the WSC in 1984 with Richards at the wheel. Was a naturally aspirated 2L F2 engine. This was sold onto Molloy whith Chris Hones at the wheel before being raced by Ludwig Finnaur with a sky blue paint scheme as he got his CAMS license. It was then further raced by Chris Hones before being passed on to a Rob Shiel? The car in now in Germany or England?

Three BMW's that raced in the day.
I'm not sure about the Gurney car, did John briggs drive it at some stage?

Timbo, those are great! The Gurney car, I'm almost certain, would be the Grice/Craven Mild machine, that later went to Bruce Lynton, then John Briggs? Lynton raced it in 1982, then Briggs had it the following year.
