Otaua Hill Climb ..

Post by Roger Dowding »

ERC wrote:The Speedex was a Jem Marsh creation -Jem of Marcos fame. This one has a supercharged Austin engine. Run by Hamish Andrew. Hamish's parents both used to marshal, race and rally, for NSCC and I know them both well, as Liz was a tutor on knitwear when I was also tutoring at ATI/AIT/AUT (and I think, was at Glengyle Knitwear, part of the Bendon Group - unless my memory is playing tricks again.)

Kevin runs either a J2 MG or the Wolseley Hornet Special and was scrutineering. As mentioned on Nigel's thread, I bought a basket case Singer Bantam (off Kevin), but it was beyond my somewhat limited skill set, so I sold it on - as a basket case.

As regards Otaua, when the MGCC took over from Austin Healey, Derek Prior and his helpers did the permit side of things and I did the timing (radios and three or four watches, no telephone wire) and results - in the early days of a laptop and Star NX10 printer, so results all done by 3pm!

The Otaua Tavern which we used as our base is closed and somewhat run down.

ERC Thanks for the information about the Speedex and your involvement at Otaua too !!.
Otaua Hill Climb
Our timing system was very basic - small club with at the beginning very enthusiastic helpers which did fade over time affiliated Club Northern Sports and was horrified with some of their events - kids in cars at Gymkhana, as passengers, No permits they didn't realise a permit gave you Liability Insurance.

Will be part of my archives of events ..
I do hope to make the 2020 running .. Also looking at being at C and C in April,- with a bit of planning .. we can have another chat !!
Cheers

P S your post #2780 - can only see one of the six photos - the MG Midget " OPLOCK ".. others missing

I managed a fair few photographs on this weekend and thankfully, the weather was kind.

In terms of the most photogenic action pics of single seaters, the Cooper Bristol would be in my top 5.

Spotted in a front garden in Queenstown. I have asked before if anyone knows exactly what it is - or was, but zero responses, so reposted now there is a larger audience.

Ray, your Queenstown car will be either a Tiki or a Puma - damned if I can remember which is which. There was a discussion her a few years back....

Thanks Paul. That looks to be correct. Interesting the ad says '100mph', so what underpinnings? May give google a burst, though I'm sure there was a Puma produced in Argentina I saw at the London Racing Car Show, must have been around 1965/66.

Thanks Paul. That looks to be correct. Interesting the ad says '100mph', so what underpinnings? May give google a burst, though I'm sure there was a Puma produced in South America (Brazil, not Argentina!) I saw at the London Racing Car Show, must have been around 1965/66.

According to Patrick Harlow's book, the chassis was a bespoke unit. The only engine mentioned is the prototype's A35. Bear in mind that it could also be a Tiki or Falcon as they were all derived from the UK Ashley. I went with the Puma because of the distinctive sidelights on the Puma brochure matching the Queenstown car. There is a bit more info on the NZ Cars - A Cottage Industry thread on this site.

100mph from an A35 engine would be a little ambitious, without a little more than the twin carb kit offered!

Apart from the other Legends, such as Bryce Platt, Dale Mathers, John McKechnie, Ray Williams, John Tomlin, Chris Watson etc. (and Melissa Morgan!), I was delighted to meet someone I have been looking forward to meeting for ages. A first time catch up with Milan Fistonic. When people start digging into the history of cars or drivers, Milan's work is invaluable and he has made a huge difference to speeding up my filing.

Just a couple of pics from Sunday. A very sensible move, mixing the front-engined or non-disc braked Formula Juniors, with the Hooters Vintage series.

Struggling to upload pics at the moment. Will return later.

Presumably a sprint at Pukekohe. Not sure of the date but could be 1988?

Certainly no earlier than 1987 when the Aluminium numbers on Black number plates were replaced by the Black Numbers on White Metal [ Tin ] plate staring at NA .. My new Fiat Uno purchased in later 1987 had an NG plate NG4909 ..

My thoughts too Roger. When trying to date the slides, you have to grab every clue that you possibly can.

Can anyone confirm the dates here? Given that it is the same race number... Pictures 2 & 3 I'm guessing at September 1986 but is picture #1 1983?

Dating Photos and Slides..

Re ; ' My thoughts too Roger. When trying to date the slides, you have to grab every clue that you possibly can. '

Yes indeed, I know that a lot of my Pukekohe photo's were the incorrect meeting - and as I had given all my Pukekohe programme's 1966 - mid late 1970's away and all my Motorman Magazines 1964 - 84 was unable to reconcile pictures with events.
-some were Ok as had written on the back of the prints when the film was processed - somehad dates on the packets too, a few had process dates on the negs and prints - mainly when I borrowed my grandmothers Leica camera and took Colour pics.

Thank Goodness for people like Milan Fistonic on TRS and Facebook pages [ Milan's archives are amazing ] and Graham Woods on a couple of facebook pages too.

TRS is a bit disjointed with all the threads but it is a great collection of information.
Graham seems to have programme's from late 1950's through the 1960's and on - and Motorman Magazine back into the early 1960's
