Hi Grant. A big thank you for that request, as it helped me sort another query that had been bugging me.

Car #66 is a Cooper T66 entered and driven by Syd Hoole.

That led me to consult the race programme and do a google search on a car that I had previously labelled a Cooper, but couldn't find any matching images, despite a lot of research. I was confused by the fact that it was running on wire wheels. Turns out that it wasn't a Cooper at all, but the 1960 Walker-Climax Tec Mec Tipo 10 - tested by Moss but never raced. I wouldn't have discovered that, had you not raised the query and wasn't even aware of the car prior. I am overjoyed when a missing piece of a jigsaw puzzle is found (I'm a simple soul at heart...).

What engine is in the 66 car. Looks to me like some kind of V8.

Allan,
That is a Coventry Climax V-8 engine from the 1.5 liter Formula One era.
( " Introduced in 1961 amidst some criticism, the new reduced engine 1.5 L formula took control of F1 just as every team and manufacturer switched from front to mid-engined cars. Although these were initially underpowered, five years later average power had increased by nearly 50% and lap times were better than in 1960. The old 2.5 L formula had been retained for International Formula racing, but this didn't achieve much success until the introduction of the Tasman Series in Australia and New Zealand during the winter season, leaving the 1.5 L cars as the fastest single seaters in Europe during this time. The power range was between 150 hp (112 kW) and 225 hp (168 kW)."
(Wikipedia info.)
Check the size of these pistons.

Wonderful photos Ray.
Your Connaught photo reminded me of the January 11th 1958 NZGP field at Ardmore.

"The two 2.5-litre Connaughts bought by Bernie Eccleston after the break-up of the small privately-owned concern were driven by Roy Salvadori and Stuart Lewis-Evans who, like Scott-Brown, was to lose his life later in the year. The Connaught had been developed over a period of six years around a basically Lea-Francis motor, conforming to the current Formula I requirements at the time the cars came to New Zealand. It had always been at a disadvantage in power, but had carried the flag for Britain while the BRM underwent its lengthy gestation and the Vanwall was being developed.
The most notable win was in the Syracuse Grand Prix of 1955, and of the two cars Salvadori was driving a Syracuse model, B3 - actually the ex-Marr car rebuilt and re-engined, and Lewis-Evans, B7, the wedge-shaped Connaught Dart.

...and a bit of seasonal green - of course. I'd be thrilled to bits if Santa parked any of these in my garage, red or green.

An opportune time to wish everyone who pops in here on a regular basis, either to look or comment, the compliments of the season.

Many thanks to those who add missing information or correct errors, your contributions are very much appreciated.

At this time of the year, I make sure everything is backed up (I do back up regularly anyway) and clear some of the crud out of the computer and just remind everyone else to make sure your files are backed up on a separate device. We aren't away for Christmas so I may continue posting now and again and at this stage, I haven't even decided what events to go to in NZ in 2019.

I do miss the annual January HD Festivals of old and doubt that I'll make Taupo, but some day, I do intend to do another South Island event, having called briefly at Teretonga some years ago - and got soaked!

Cheers everyone - and I hope Rhys has managed to get back in to see the posts!

ERC, and best wishes to you and yours, have just PM'd Ken H and John Mck as I could be a " maybe " for Taupo.. and " Caffeine and Classics for the end of January seem like a starter for me - Will take the almost 30 year old MX5 [ 1991 model ] - well they made the first NA series in 1989 so should qualify - just borrow a Rego sticker of an older car ??.
Take care all of you

Cheers

Roger D.
