AFAIK, Can Am didn't mandate the "stock block". Look at almost every car, Porsche, Ferrari McLaren Lola, ... None of the "factory" cars were stock block. All were race engines, OK some of the Chev based things were similar, but Reynolds, amongst others were making non stock blocks.
