Hill Climb Mauriceville, Wairaparapa NZ

Post by Roger Dowding »

Roger Dowding wrote:Allan Hyndman, thank you for the offer I will save the photos and thanks for posting them here.

My photo's of Bernie car in 1989 at Masterton were after a repaint to Burgundy, which was a lot better than the gold, presume had some other work done too. I remember when it was Gold unsure if I have any photos back then.
My version of your photo I got from Jerry Luidahl in Oregon USA he used on a Facebook tribute to Bernie as he knew him well too, we were all at Snowmass together in 1982, Bernie used it on a Christmas Card a few years ago,A lot of Healey Guys were doing that, there Healey on a card and sending them to friends, have a few tucked away from some of the USA guys
In recent times the car was purchased by a guy who wanted to fit a V8 but couldn't get compliance so he reverted to a new Valiant six

Allan Hyndman,
I googled Mauriceville, Wairaparapa and yes there is a a windy road with a great hairpin in it that leads to a terraced excavation so probably the quarry you mention.
Have sent a colour copy of your photos to Jerry Luidahl in Oregon - cheers

Chelsea 'Walsh ' Hill Climb, Chelsea Sugar Works, Birkenhead

Post by Roger Dowding »

The event is on this Sunday - the 35th ** Running of it, I think.
I intend to be there Camera in hand.
Starts at 9;00 a.m.

http://new-zealand-events.com/event/vcc-waitemata-branch-chelsea-walsh-hillclimb

and yes it is not a Healey ..
Motor Racing - Chelsea Hill Climb VCC NZ pic.jpg

Here are some notes from the Waitemata Branch of the Vintage Car Club - about the events. First run in October 1976 **

The Chelsea Walsh Hill Climb
Today seen as one of New Zealand’s most elegant and delightful hill climbs.

The Chelsea event was dreamt up 35 years ago by the late Barry Gay, who though contacts at the NZ Sugar Refinery managed to persuade the Company that their private access road would make an excellent motorsport venue. Reluctantly they agreed to trial the idea and it was agreed that Sunday 31st October 1976 was a suitable date.

The name “Chelsea Walsh” was of course a play on words by John Hearne in homage to the famous Shelsley Walsh Hill climb in England. Like its namesake the road rises away from a flat start beside the cooling ponds, cuts right over a small concrete bridge and then climbs steadily up through a heavily wooded thicket to burst out onto the bottom of the left hand Hairpin. This is a non constant curve and its double camber twist has been the bête noir that exercises the driving skills of all the competitors. Exiting the hairpin the road continues up through the parkland and flicks right to go past the Sugar Works cottages. Over the finish line, a snappy throttle off and a judicious application of retardation before pulling off to the left and into the upper parking reserve.

I'll be there Roger! Probably not first thing - more like about 11:30. Would be good to catch up. Yup, camera at the ready - Nikon shoulder strap and either a 2004 NZ Rally jacket or a Chicane shirt... Possibly park the green MGF at the top just inside the gates.

Pic above I think is Kevin Andrew (Wolseley Hornet Special) from whom I once bought a Singer Bantam project - but it was beyond my capabilities so I sold it on. Kevin and wife Liz were regular flag marshals in the early 1980's.

The Wolseley is more usually driven by Kevin's son Hamish. I'm unsure which is in that lovely pic. I love the background blur to give the speed impressions, and hard to do well, as it is done well here Ray.

Not my pic Rhys! That is Kevin driving though. Slightly slower shutter speed and 'panning' will give the blurred background. Kevin - black helmet, Hamish - silver helmet.

MGF is at the back of the garage so we will be in the modern too, but will park that in the street.

My wife may well come with me to enjoy the walk, but we won't be there too long... Weather is OK at the moment, just, but it looks a bit on the cloudy side and I'd expect a drop of rain.

PS: Wrong - bright sunshine!

Just missed you! Alan Horner said you'd gone. Would have like to have caught up with BMC Boy - was he the bearded one on the outside of the 'big' corner, with a lens the size of a fence post?

ERC, I saw that Healey as I was driving back, would have waved to the driver but who would be looking at an SX4 ??
BMC BOY is clean shaven, his mate Reg has a beard a bit like Allan Horner. Ross still looks like he did in the 1980's
this is him a few years ago..2012, in Ross's garage with Nell Holdstock-Donaldson, Ross bought the Cooper FJ off Nell many years ago and is restoring it ..

Pity we missed each other maybe next time at " Caffeine and Classics " end of November ??

Austin Healey 100 Registration No BQ538 and other plates..

Post by Roger Dowding »

A member of the Austin Healey car Club, Morris [ appropriate name ] Wright has purchased a 100 that was at one stage owned by Frank Karl with Reg # BQ538.
It has had previous and subsequent Registration Plates as listed here ;

Morris has written the following about the car, which i have a couple of pictures of ;

" The car is BN1 152950

My understanding of its history at this stage is that it was sold new in NZ (shipped via Australia) to Howey Oswald Williams from Putaruru.
I’ve done some sleuthing and found someone in Putaruru that remembers him who told me he was a bit of a reclusive batchelor and partner in a timber haulage company.
Howey Williams owned the car until John Percival purchased it and he and Frank Karl dragged it out of the barn.
Frank looked after the car for John as he had moved to Australia by this stage. (I think most people assume it was Frank’s car)
What is interesting is among the papers that came with the car is the attached newspaper clipping from the Auckland Star 1956.
What is interesting is the car came with all the mentioned items, 100M carbs and camshaft and factory hard top.
There can’t have been many cars here that would fit that description!
I can only assume it didn’t end up selling.
It certainly hasn’t had a hard life as the alloy shrouds are in unusually good condition with original paint on the inside where they were protected from being painted when the car was changed from blue to green.

The next owner was Dawn Telford and Phillip Neil, then the owner I purchased it from.

The Heritage Certificate was issued to a Mr John Milligan although I don’t know how he fits in, maybe he was only involved in obtaining the certificate.

The registration numbers it has been issued over the years are:

1954: 360-405
1957: 120-895
1961: 225-303
1969: BQ538
1985: ML4121

The photos of it with the plate KH3000 are a red herring!
These plates belong to Frank Karl’s car and both Mark and Frank have told me that they were fitted to the 100 as it wasn’t registered and by changing the plates were able to make it look legal for the AH rally! There are also photos of Frank’s car wearing the BQ538!

I’m hoping that either the BQ538 or ML4121 plates are hanging on a Healey enthusiast’s garage wall as I’d love to reunite them with the car! "
On the way to Napier the Annual Rally in 1984 - a puncture on the way sporting the Plates from Frank's 3000

Any information and photos for the Car would be appreciated, please post here or PM me if you prefer.
The Car competed in the 1985 Porsche Club Perrier Le mans Races as evidenced by the scrutineering sticker still on the windscreen.

Morris has used the Roaring Season for information on another car an MG,but not recently.

Oldfart

This T shirt is appropriate as "Oldfart " is thinking of selling his Buckler, in the UK.
As quite a few on this forum are OF's "retired /expired " seemed appropriate.
another explanation is - " a quiet day in the Bay of Plenty ". so time to waste !!

OK better find a Healey photo. small one and small in the photo, on a car trial South of Auckland in 1974 .. the car is still registered on Carjam, a 1965 model Mark 3 Sprite..
