And speaking of Tom McIntyre, owner of the '68 Penske Camaro and a number of other significant muscle cars, he was the guy who, in the late 1960s, invented the circular hood/bonnet lock in which you press down, and turn the lock, and so doing away with the pins used previously on high performance road cars. He patented the idea, it was picked up by Ford, and used on Shelby and other high-end performance Mustangs, as well as GT and GTHO Falcons etc.
I don't think he was even 20 years old at the time.

Laguna Seca. Saturday.
There was good racing throughout the day.
The Group 4A race for 1973-1981 for IMSA GT,GTX,GTU FIA cars produced a good battle between this Porsche 935, Ken Epsman's 1976 DeKon Monza # 20 and the # 88 Greenwood Corvette.
Another good race was watching Australian, Ron Goodman climb through the field of 36 to finish 9th in his 1954 Porsche 356 # 23 in the Group 3A race.
This shows Ron hounding the 1961 Ferrari 250 GT SWB # 74 of Ned Spieker.

The red and white Greenwood Corvette sitting in third in your photo is run by a French team. It was very fast too! In fourth is Chris Bowden from Australia in the BMW M1.

I was recently in the Porsche Museum in Stuttgart and they had a 917 crankshaft on display, made from Titanium and weighed 13 kgs, 10 kgs lighter than a steel crank. Very cheap too I would imagine.

My camera battery quit right before the 2nd Can Am and Trans Am races and I was prepared and put in my back-up battery and it failed immediately. I rushed around looking for a place to charge the battery and went through Roger Williams garage out to the pit lane. I only had my phone to photograph and with a smudged lens (unknown at the time) I managed to take some "smudge shots" before I was escorted out of this area and almost run over ! (Excuse the quality but it was an exciting time for me. )
Race winner Craig Bennett waiting in his 1974 UOP Shadow DN4-1A to lead Dave Handy in his 1974 UOP Shadow DN4 out onto the track for the final Can Am race that day. They finished in this order.
Roger Williams getting ready to race in his 1971 McLaren M8E/F # 51A, as Chris MacAllister prepares to climb into his ex factory 1971 McLaren M8F-1 # 5
Two of the best looking cars in the race were the ex Penske Sunoco 1967 McLaren M6A driven by Brian Blain and the ex Penske Sunoco 1970 Ferrari 512M # 6 driven by Lawrence Stroll.

Some more of my "smudge shots."
Robert Ryan lives not far from my home and I enjoy seeing him in action in a 1968 McLaren M8B that has an unverified chassis number but it does have a inner door panel signed by Denis Hulme in 1992 shortly before Denis passed away.

As my old friend Graham Donaldson had been a race mechanic for Hotchkis Racing, I have always enjoyed seeing this Porsche 962 HR (Built by Al Holbert Racing in 1986 ) back at the track.

Sean,
I stand corrected.(that's a great photo )
As a reward I think you and Jake should sit back and enjoy how Giles drove the Ferrari 312 T4 especially during the last 3 laps of the 1979 French GP at Dijon.

Ken, Gilles is my absolute hero, I cried all day the day my father woke me with the news that he had been killed in that terrible accident, I don't think there are any of the drivers of todays drivers who could match how fair and trusting Gilles and Rene were on the 1st July 1979.

It was great to catch up with so many Kiwis at Laguna Seca, both racers and spectators. And nice to finally meet you Ken, we must do it again.
I hope the fires stay away from your place.
Bruce.

Some famous faces noted that day.

(Brian Redman in the 1975 BMW 3.0CSL that he co drove with Ronnie Peterson back then )

Jay Leno who has an interest in all types of cars.

Three wonderful Kiwis who had to put up with my endless questions. Thanks guys. It was my pleasure.
L. Bruce Thompson, C, Tony Nicholson (Robin Auto owner) and top race expert, Duncan Fox.
NZ driver Roger Williams and his beautifully prepared 1971 McLaren M8 E/F which he drove near the front in the morning race but unfortunately dropped out early in the later race with engine issues.
It was great to watch him in action.

Probably my most favourite Boss 302 race car at Monterey, talk about history.
Missed catching you Ken but managed to catch up with Mike Ryan, and other Kiwis, certainly the Aussies and Kiwis had a presence at Monterey this year.

My other favourite was Mike Eddy's 63 Falcon Hardtop racer, started out as an early Falcon but had updated sheet metal fitted period. Mikes build and attention to detail was fantastic. I believe Bruce Kimmons(Ex Palmy/Shannon?) area done all the panel work during the restoration.

Dale,
I am sorry not to have caught up with you and I kept going back to Roger Williams and asking where you were. Perhaps next year.
It was a bonus to check the place out with Bruce Thompson when he was not helping Chad Raynal with his # 64 Yellow 1969 Z28.
and next to them was a car I never get tired of looking at, # 77 , Richard Goldsmith's 1970 Dodge Challenger.
