I just heard some sad news today. Harold Heasley has passed away. Harold was the first New Zealand Saloon Car Champion, having won the title in 1960, driving a Humber 80.
Rest in Peace Harold.

Re: Harold Heasley
RIP Harold.
There was a very nice piece on Harold by Eion Young in the recent Classic Driver magazine. A fitting tribute.

Re: Harold Heasley
....remember sitting on the side of the road, around 6.30/7.00, having breakfast,on the way to the Waimate 50,with my Father and his friend George Drayton, when we heard this noise from a distance, it was getting closer and closer and louder, then out of the early morning mist...Vroooom....a two tone Grey Humber80, open exhaust, back seat area stacked with spare wheels, slight wave and gone....Mr Humber 80, Harold Heasley, probably running a 'new'engine in, as you did!!!.......R.I.P to a Champion......with respect, Myles Johnson./thunder427
Re: Harold Heasley
A magic gentleman.
A night that will remains in my memory was when we were involved with the running of the 1st Waimate 50 reunion race meeting and quite a bit of the Saturday night was spent in the Waimate Hotel in company with Gerry McKissock, Ernie Sprague, Sammy Mills and Harold.
How few of us ever have the chance to spend an evening in the company of our boyhood heros, it was a special evening and one I will treasure forever.

A couple of photos I took at the Southern Festival meeting in Feb 2006 I think

I find it sad when these heros of old depart this earth. All the more reason to get as much of our history recorded asap on this website.
