Photos: The Bill Pottinger Collection - Part 3

Time for another new photo thread. Parts 1 and 2 of the amazing Bill Pottinger collection of historic New Zealand motor racing images proved hugely popular. Bill has continued sending me photos, and Part 3 should be just as enjoyable.

Once again, with Bill as a young bloke being based in Invercargill, these images are centred around his local race track of Teretonga, but we also travel north a little, to other South Island race venues.

Anyway, enjoy these. My thanks once again to Bill for sharing his stunning images with us. Many of these have never been seen before, which makes them all the more special.

First up, and we're off to Timaru. This is 1970, with Peter Hughes in the pretty little Lotus.

This is Dennis Marwood, with 'the fat one', the Eisert Chevrolet. It was built as a USAC car, but then converted for Formula A/5000, and sent down to New Zealand with Stew McMillan in late 1968 for the grandly named Monaco International Trophy, at Bay Park. This was the first time F5000 cars had raced in New Zealand. The Eisert stayed on after McMillan went back home, and Dennis Marwood drove it during the first couple of years of F5000 in NZ.

At Teretonga, and some sedan racing action. This is Paul Fahey in the Cambridge sponsored Boss Mustang that would eventually become the PDL Mustang. Fahey leads Don Halliday in the Escort the Halliday brothers campaigned for several seasons, and is now owned by John Dennehey.

1 - Note the little 'winglets' on the Lola T192 behind the front wheels

2 - Daimler V8! Probably seemed like a good idea at the time. Peter has since told me he wishes he's stuck to a T-C. And kept it, the Lotus, for a lot longer...

3 - good old Marbles - great Alfa man - 80 last year, although you'd never know it.

4 - always loved the Steppenwolf tribute on the Halliday's Escort - get ya motor running...

Note rear tyres with big groove in middle, was this a 'wet weather' conversion.

Quite but after running the Daimler, Peter stuck the 'tin can' in and wished he'd never bothered with the Daimler exercise. That car had already had a Climax V8 then a BRM V8 in the back!!

From the Teretonga round of the 1971 Tasman Series, and Teddy Pilette thunders down the front straight on his way to 3rd place finish in the McLaren M10B.

Beaut piks Bill & Thanks Steve....... 5 days ago Judy & Marion [Rolo,s] Ex & daughter popped into say hi.... we go back a wee way ... never seen this pik of Roly before .. see the look of the drug in the eyes [motor racing ] competition up the pointy end was big time in those days [& still is at that level as we know....].

A quite rare shot this one, as it captures the infamous BRP Ford actually moving under its own power! Under the grandly titled Sir Charles Napier Racing, Kaye Griffiths was awarded a fairly reasonable chunk of cash to run each New Zealand round of the 1970 Tasman Series. After having failed to even start the Bay Park, Levin, and Wigram races, and failing to finish at Pukekohe in the NZGP, Griffiths abandoned the old nail and Peter Hughes tried it out for size here at Teretonga. Unfortunately, it suffered a series of issues, and again failed to make the grid.

I remember this car at Wigram and thinking what a pile of shit it was even as a 15 year old the car was a joke the driver was a joke the entry to The Tasman Series was Fraud and im afraid Ron Frost and his merry men never done their homework on this bunch of wankers.

Some dramatic tin-top action. This is Teretonga, 1971, and Jack Nazer in the Cossack Escort battles Clyde Collins in the PDL Falcon. A lap or so later the pair fought over the same piece of tarmac, this time with Nazer on the inside, and spearing straight across the tyres. In behind, enjoying the view, is Don Halliday.
