2013 Goodwood Revival

Post by Steve Holmes »

Its on this coming weekend, September 13-15 2013. Among the marques being celebrated is the Ford GT40, and the Revival event will feature a special race, called the Whitsun Trophy, which will be made up entirely of Ford GT40s.

As always, The Roaring Season will feature a full array of photos from the event.

Re the grid shot, can I take a guess that they are Lotus38, Lotus 30/40 and a DKW 900 (although goodness knows what its doing there). Correct ?

Terry, this display was on the Friday, marking 50 years since Jim Clark won his first Formula 1 World Championship. The cars represent, or are the actual, cars raced by Clark during his career. I believe his first race car was a DKW?

Yes Steve, Jim Clark's first race was in a DKW. I hadn't realised the significance of the grid.
I just dusted off my copy of "Jim Clark at the wheel - his own exciting story" a 1964 Pan paperback.
His first race was in June 1956 at Crimond, a Scotish circuit. He had a friend Ian Scott Watson who had a DKW "Sonderklasse" who used it in everthing from rallies to sprints. He entered it for Clark in a "Sports under 1,200cc" race. He finished 8th.
In a table in the book it is noted as a "DKW 3/6".
Maybe there is a DKW aficionado out there who can tell us the difference between a Sonderklasse, a 3/6 and a 900?
Personally I don't think I have ever seen a DKW.

I think the same model had three different names during it's production life. The 'Deek' Sonderklasse (special class) was the best equipped, fastest version. There's more detail here: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/DKW_3%3D6
See also "Jim Clark" by Eric Dymock, Foulis/Haynes 1997, ISBN 0-85429-982-3, page 81 et seq.
I spent two happy hours at the Fressingfield Oily Rag Club, here in Norfolk, last night listening to Cedric Selzer reminiscing about working at Lotus 1961-64 with Jim Clark and others.

Thanks Madgwick. So all three names were basically for the same car.
For interest do the details in your Jim Clark book differ from those in my poor old paperback?
