These two superb photos taken at a Pukekohe event in 1969 were posted by new member maxspeed in his intro: http://www.theroaringseason.com/showthread.php?1151-Newbie

In it he threw down the challenge for someone to name all the drivers in these photos. Anyone up for it?

Using the bottom photo, going back along the inside.... Red Dawson,Paul Fahey,Barry Phillips, David Simpson, then possibly Jim Richards ( driving my father in laws Escort) a Triumph Vitesse,and possibly Noel Goodwin in the Mk2 Zephyr. On the outside going back... Rod Coppins (having just bought the Camaro off Spinner Black) , John Riley, Jack Nazer, Mk1 Cortina not sure. Someone else can have a go now......!!!

Spencer Black told me he sold this Camaro to Rod in December 69/ January 70 and it was Cambridge colours
The Camaro has Lexington colours on it, same as Dave Simpsons Escort so that makes this the previous years season.
Terry Scott was the only other driver, he drove it once , and that was at Levin March 22. This is Pukekohe so it must be Black driving it.
Also Red Dawson had no lip spoiler 68-69, but it was fitted 60-70, so as there is no spoiler this makes it 68-69, the year Paul won the series.
Also on the side of the front of the Mustang under question there is no J.Riley Car Sales.
If you have proof that this is incorrect , then put it here. I can take criticism without resentment.

The race was event 6 at the NZIGP meeting on Jan 4 1969.

This is the entry list from the programme. Riley was driving car 141, not Coppins.

And this is the official grid sheet for the event. Unfortunately I didn't fill in who was driving the Zephyr at the back of the field but at the next Pukekohe meeting on March 8 car number 130 was Noel Goodwin driving a Ford Zephyr so it would be safe to assume it was him.

The Motorman report of the race start has this: "Red Dawson made best of the start ... , but perhaps the most impressive sight was the snaking Camaro of Spencer Black which slotted into second ahead of Paul Fahey."


Fahey got second place on lap1 and later passed Dawson only for Red to re-take the lead on lap 3. On lap 6 the cars touched at the hairpin and Dawson spun off but resumed to finish second but was unable to challenge the leader because of clutch problems.

Black retired with flat-spotted tyres. Riley pitted with clutch trouble.

If you look in the `Sponsors' thread at post #5 which shows both the Dave Simpson Escort and the Camaro in Lexington colours. Now my father didn`t have any association with Spinner Black, but did plenty of work on Rods various cars. I was curious then in response to your statement about it not being Rod having the Camaro then, when the trailer the Camaro is sitting on at that very same meeting was built by my father for Rod in less than a week, and as seen in the same photo is still in primer with overspray on the tyres, which incidentally my father got off Bruce McLean, from memory they were off a damaged Ford Mainline ute ( hence the mudgrips still on the rims). In regards to the Cambridge team, the Camaro and two HD or HR station wagons were painted by a friend of Bruce McLeans in Takanini. The same guy also painted Paul Faheys fastback Mustang which had been bought out of the USA as a very low mileage stolen and recovered car. If you look at the first grid photo, look at the rear quarters of Red Dawsons Mustang they have no signwriting on them. Look at the Camaro sitting on the trailer in the other thread Reds Mustang in the background has got `Autonews' taped on to the rear guards. I would say the grid photo is a Saturday race and the trailer photo is the next day?. Forget what the programme says, I can assure you Rod did one meeting in the Camaro, in Lexington colours, with Spinners number, having sold the Mustang to John Riley, who ran with no signwriting, but was it this meeting?. How are we looking now......

Ross Skinner in the blue, supercharged, Mark One Cortina nearly caused a major calamity by taking to the grass in Castrol and re-entering the race a little further on about five places ahead. Brakes locked and cars stopped to avoid the Cortina driver who looked a little shaken by it all.

That`s right Oldfart. I`didn`t have the luxury of a programme or a Motorman as a reference, I just had a go based on my limited knowledge and I got a few of them. I got into HMC with a Camaro because of our familys involvement with Rod and if I buy the other `67 Camaro out of the US I`ll paint it up in the Winfield colours as a tribute to him. What pisses me off is when someone makes a statement, rather than ask a question, bearing in mind it was a long time ago, a lot of these guys are no longer with us, and most of us on here are so simply as an interest. I think it`s great to have guys like Ross on here, and lets hope he`s got plenty more to contribute.

Calm down, mate. If Spinner Black told John he sold the car to Coppins in Cambridge colours, there's not much more for the bloke to go on. Take a leaf from Milan and The Fountain himself, David McKinney, and pass on your advice and knowledge in a helpful, courteous way. It's not a pissing contest, and the race was over 40 years ago. Looks like we got them sorted in the end.

Actually my comment was more for Ross. I was around at that time too, and have been shot down on here for absolute knowledge.

What sort of supercharger did you fit? It must have sounded incredible!
