New Zealand 'Lady Racer's, Administrators and 'dam good sports'!!!!!!!!

Post by thunder427 »

Was enjoying the 'Used car' thread, which suddenly took a turn towards 'Lady Racers'......Thought,Mmmmmmmm, might be time for a dedicated thread to our 'Ladies of Motorsport'...................

In discussion at this time is ..Sybil Lupp.......we have,Miss June Monk from Lyttleton/Royal Hotel (now up for demolition,if not already!!) whom drove a 'Powder Blue XK140 Jaguar Coupe at a number of Cant,Car Club Events......Miss Ivy Stephenson, was very competitive in her great little 'Buckler' (Lotus style) sports Car.....Then we have Another truely great lady, whom we shall 'adopt' as a Kiwi, Howden Ganley lovely, talented ,late wife Judy,a very acomplished Lady behind the wheel,I trust the Ganley family will welcome us talking about Judys many talents on this Forum....which I believe from another Forum its Judy's '70th birthday celebration, at this time........regards thunder427/MJ :)

Diane Foote in Dunedin was a very good motorcycle racer in the 60s. Married Neville Landrebe who was killed at Puke. Diane still lives in Dunedin.

Ivy Stephenson had been a bit reclusive from motor racing for many years but she made an appearance at the recent VCC/HRSCC Roycroft meeting at Hampton Downs. Here she is next to her old Buckler (photo thanks to Jim Barclay).

That's be Mrs June Monk, Thunder. She started off racing her husband's Ford 10 specials, then a pink TR2. The XK140 was the car with which Frank Cantwell had had so much success before importing the Tojeiro

....David; you have better recall, possibly, on the story regarding the time a 'Couple of Likely Lads', stole Franks Tojero and drove it through a Car showroom window, then stuck in 2nd gear, proceeded to drive theJ ag over Dyers Pass Rd/Port Hills to Lytleton.......regards thunder427/MJ :)

Isobel Boreham raced in grass track meetings, hillclimbs and co-drove with Ivy Stephenson in one of the long distance saloon car races at Puke in a Fiat 500 I think. She was also a MANZ steward, on the MANZ executive, co drove with husband Steve in rallies. Before that she and Steve were very keen triallists at Gold Star level. Then there was Cheryl Parnell, Mary Carney, Debbie(?) Lester, all good drivers there by right.

That lady Elvie Williams could peddle, pity she slipped off the scene as she would have gone along way. She was very smooth with a car. Watched her towel up her then old man and every one else one day at Puke in the wet on club curcuit in a Escort 1600 Sport (chocolate colour) and I was not paying attention to her, true.

Wasn't it another lady who drove the Maybelline Mini?
Or did Cheryl take over the sponsorship?

Hey! Everyone's forgetting about Jenny Watson. Beat the boys fair and square at Baypark in FV. Moved into FF briefly then headed off to the UK and marriage. Fond memories Finchy?

I also recall Elvie being pretty fast - indeed pretty and fast.

I was once whisked around Bathurst by Heather Spurle ina Commodore while I was doing a live radio report back to NZ - now she could peddle
