New Zealand Ashley Forest Rally Sprint

Post by Steve Holmes »

Stumbled upon this while searching for something else. Really neat bit of old tv coverage here from the semi-final and final of the 1985 Ashley Forest Rally Sprint. It came down to a 4-car battle between Malcolm Stewarts ex-works Audi Quattro, Neil Allports Mazda RX7, Kim Austins Holden 308 V8 powered Chevette (complete with auto trans), and Trevor Crowes Oldsmobile V8 powered Toyota Starlet OSCA racer. A real mix of Kiwi built specials and high-end rally machines.

And for anyone who has the time, the entire top 32 from the 1984 event is also currently online!

Ha ha ha, yeah I bet you did too Jamie. It was a great event, that somehow produced an even playing field between the backyard specials and the big dollar rally machines. Made for some spectacular creations.

I have a copy of the 1982 televised event that I plan to convert from PAL VHS and put it up on Youtube soon. I will post the link when I get it done.

I just dug the tape out of a box of archived race stuff. It turns out I have 1982 and 1983 Ashley Forest Rallysprints. I competed in both. I remember Reg Cook won in his Datsun Sunny Shellsport car against Tony Teesdale in his Engine Rebuilders RS 1800.

I will try to find a PAL to NTSC conversation shop within the next couple of weeks, convert it to mpeg and share this record of history with you guys.
