Re: NZ Castrol GTX Racing in the 70's

I think it was this round and especially looking at the results, one competitor showed me under their bonnet and the Datsun had twin carburettors!!!! They changed the rules and allowed the bigger valve head, lower diff ratio and wider wheels. Not everyone had this stuff of course. Just another stuff ...

Re: North Island Shellsport cars - where are they?

Yes Steve,

There was the 3 classes, 0-1300, 0-4200, 0-6000cc. All cars had to have the Shellsport signage on them and ran in the Shellsport championship events.
Sometimes the OSCA cars were allowed to run with us, (Trevor Crowe against my car in the SI rounds).

Re: North Island Shellsport cars - where are they?

Hi Dale,

The Shellsport series was earlier than that. My little car won the 75/76 and the 76/77 0-1300cc championships. Then they wanted to go 0-2000 at a drivers meeting we all attended. It was voted in for the following year

Re: Historic Sport Sedans

I have a photo of me following this car at Baypark in my shellsport Datsun. Unfortunately you can only see the rear mudguard of this car. So you might say I know first hand how this car went. How Adrian Dobbe found the Warwick Gray Viva as a "barn find", this car was first raced in 1974. "it all ...

Re: whats the reason behind your race number?

Interesting.............was given 59 for the B & H race and carried that over to win the GTX series in my Fiat 128. Was given number 88 as a random number for Shellsport. Won the 2 consecutive championships with that number. In Quuensland used 88 to win the Gemini championship. Reversed the number ...

Re: Fiat 125T

Hi Steve, I think Dads car was entered by Torino motors as well. I was still at school and must have been 15 at the time. 'Our' T came as a virtually standard car without the engine mods. I ran this car in for Dad up and down the motoway in Auckland for what seems like ages. Doug Bremner who always ...

Re: Where Are All The '70s And '80s Photos?

'Looks like she beat you into the loop Steve' Ah yes- however I have an excuse! Christine drove this car at this track very well indeed. The two of us were along way ahead of the rest. I was racing this car after this scratch GTX race in the B & H with John Woolf. We had to have the full std exhaust ...

Re: Baypark ; lost tracks - Australian Muscle Car issue 83

People commenting about tracks. Levin was a drivers track, you needed to be committed to be quick there. Manfield was also a drivers track, and I did drive there at the very first meeting as a school boy which was my 2nd national race meeting, the first being Baypark. Loved the place. I remember the ...

So Grant, you were a mad HQ driver! I got talked into running one over here in Brisbane. Did some races and ended up President of the Qld HQ racing association for a year.

I remember looking at an Imp with a datsun engine at Baypark, maybe 1976? It was in the 0-1300 Shellsport race that i was racing in also.

Hi Grant, Sorry i have only just seen your post. I do have alot of photos of my Shellsport Datsun B110 coupe, however would not want to post them on this thread as this is about your family. That is a great shot of our Dads together after that long distance series. if you are interested and seeing ...

Back to grass roots low key motorsport

Remember the days of people turning up with a car, knocking off the hubcaps and away you go? As a kid i watched my Dad do this countless times. Grass track racing, and national circuit racing & Rallying. Back then Dad thought anyone using a car trailer, mag wheels, little steering wheels or racing ...

I read that somewhere also, however do not remember it. It would have been a Datsun 1200 coupe which was 1300cc and racing against Dennis Marwood who had a 120Y. Those were very quick cars, you would have enjoyed them. A very Merry Christmas to you and your family.
Regards to all,

Re: Photos: The Sprague Family Collection

Nice XU1 shots Grant. I used to come home from school and back Dad's XU1 out of the garage and take my mates out for a fang. I hope they never told their parents about doing 120mph with the 15 year old driver at the wheel. I did a club circuit in one at Puke and was in the lead (my first race ...
