The life and motor racing career of Ivan Segedin are being celebrated by Historic Muscle Cars at the 2014 New Zealand Festival of Motor Racing. These A3 sized posters of Ivan in his legendary Mustang, which I've just finished making, will be made available for those who get in early! My thanks to Terry Marshall for supplying the stunning images.

Ivan Segedin won the Over 1300 class of the separate MANZ Gp2 Championship

David is quite correct to point this out, as, for the sake of any tributes related to Ivan's motor racing achievements, the Group 2 championship was run completely separately from the NZRDC championship. The 1966 NZRDC championship (usually just referred to these days as the NZ Saloon Car Championship) was open to Allcomer cars, and was won by Dave Simpson in a Lotus twin-cam 'Breadvan' Anglia, with Paul Fahey finishing the championship second in a similar car. Rod Coppins finished third in the Zephyr Corvette.

For the 1966 season, a separate championship under FIA Group 2 rules was introduced, perhaps as an indication of where Motorsport NZ wanted saloon car racing to head in the future. The Group 2 championship had its own points system, and while sometimes the series ran within the NZRDC series, with Group 2 cars being awarded points based on where each car finished in relation to other Group 2 cars, they also sometimes ran their own separate races. Whereas the NZRDC championship had seven rounds, the Group 2 championship had eight rounds.

Jim Mullins won the overall 1966 Group 2 championship in a Mini Cooper, collecting 57 points from Brian Innes in a similar car, who scored 50 points. Segedin finished third, on 47 points. Cars were split into two classes: 0-1,300cc, and Over 1,300cc. Points were awarded 10, 7, 5, 3, 1, within each class, which counted towards the overall Group 2 championship. But within the overall championship, drivers were then awarded for their final points positions within their class. Therefore, Segedin collected 47 points to the 41 of his closest class rival Alf Bell in a Cortina GT.

So while the Motorsport NZ site is not incorrect, it is slightly misleading, as it suggests Segedin won a class within the NZRDC championship that the Allcomers were contesting. But that said, he did indeed win his class in the 1966 Group 2 Championship.

That list is legitimate, although it combines several championships

In 1966 and 1967 however the main saloon championship was the NZRDC series, won respectively by Dave Simpson and Robbie Francevic

Sorry to have taken this thread OT - I remember Ivan's first races in the Mk2 Zephyr and later of course the Anglia and Mustang, and always admired his approach

Not wishing to get in the middle, what fullnoise refers to is Motorsport NZ' own site.

David, I realise you have a lot of knowledge, but if you google `Ivan Segedin Motorsport NZ' then go down to `Discontinued Race Championships'. Scroll right down the page and you will see for yourself. I was doing a bit of research for a `Memorial Trophy' for Ivan that I`m getting done for our HMC class at the Ferrari Festival and that`s how I came to read it. I didn`t put it on here to create an argument, I merely stated what was written about him in trying to do something out of respect for the guy.

When he raced the Fleetwood Motors Mustang at Pukekohe I remember the thunder of the V8 and that nose up attitude under acceleration. Compared to the Lotus Cortina's it was an impressive beast. Not entirely successful but it certainly opened the door to the V8's

Thinking of Ivan and his family at this time - thanks for the memories.

Yes, I endorse those thoughts. There has been a few of late, and I know we can not change time and illness, but it still hits the nerve when you hear of a comrade passing. All Motorsport in New Zealand is indeed indepted to Ivan and family. Thank you for the memories and times shared Ivan.
RIP Ivan there is a Marlin out there with your name on it.
