Re: Photos: 2018 Monterey Motorsports Reunion

As I drove away from parking lot I crossed over part of the original Laguna Seca circuit, so I stopped and thought back of all the famous drivers who had driven on this piece of macadam as they sped from Turn 2 along this straight before heading up the hill toward the "Corkscrew Turn".
20180819_181736.jpg

Looking back toward Turn 2 where the new course turns away to right toward the infield area.

20180819_181749.jpg

Looking past my trusty BMW chariot to where the infield part joins up and heads under the bridge and up the hill.

Laguna Seca Turn 1 today.jpg

The Turn 2 corner as it looks today instead of the long sweeper as it used to be. A few drivers such as Mario Andretti, Keke Rosberg and Warwick Brown have managed to find their noses in the dirt of the bank on the outside of the turn on the right as I tried to point out.
The other arrow points to where I stood to take the old circuit photos.

An 1987 photo showing turn 2 before the track was altered and the turn now is almost a hairpin.
Back then you could walk along the access road and look right down on the cars racing by.

Nissan GTP ZX-T.jpg

As Nissan was the featured make this year I think it rather fitting that my final photo is one I took of Geoff Brabham at speed in his Nissan GTP ZX-T # 83. May 1987, as he speeds along the track I was standing on in August 2018.

Siata - a well known and raced car

by Roger Dowding » Sun Sep 23, 2018 11:53 pm

Ken H, that Siata has been in Historic Racing a long time - I saw it at Monterey in 1982 - 36 years and events ago !!
Think it may have to PIR in 1988 as well - now to find photos.

One car that always seems to be circulating around at most Historic Meets that I attend is the little 1952 Siata Gran Sport # 87 driven by Robert Williams. Powered by it's 1400 cc engine it just seems to purr along.

Not knowing much about the vehicle I checked and found these 1952 items which I hope can be read ok.

Terry,
We were very spoilt in NZ back in the early sixties also.
This is the lineup for the 1961 NZGP at Ardmore. Jan 1961.

Terry,
A good question and I happened to find this on Roger Penske and the Telar-Duralite Climax Cooper Monaco.

" Roger Penske -- Cooper Monaco
Penske finished 4th in the "L.A. Times Grand Prix" at Riverside on Oct. 15, 1961. Not yet a mogul, Penske was already a canny businessman and ran with "Telar" sponsorship. The next year Penske returned to Riverside with his controversial single-seat "Zerex Special" and won the 1962 "L.A. Times Grand Prix". ( tamsoldracecarsite.net)

Some photos of his Cooper Monaco in 1961-1962.

One would have to agree that this is a pretty good field.

What an absolutely incredible starting list for that 1962 Sports Car Race.

To mention just a few names, Masten Gregory, Jack Brabham, Bruce McLaren, Roger Penske, Joakim Bonnier, Innes Ireland, Tim Mayer, Lloyd Ruby, Graham Hill, Briggs Cunningham, Jim Hall, Dan Gurney and Ken Miles.

I note that #6 driven by Roger Penske is a TELAR-DURALITE CLIMAX.
Does anyone know anything about that car?

Here is a site that has a photo gallery of the 2018 Rolex weekend.
At least in our photos we can tell the difference between an Indy car and a F 5000 machine !

Ken at least we had a quick beer this time, next time we will sit and have a box and you won't have to leave early and drive home. Was great to catch up, always hard to chat and stop some times when sorting cars, but your time was precious, cheers mate.

It will be one month tomorrow since I went to Laguna Seca for one day.
It has taken me this long to enter those photos from that one day. Just imagine if I had gone for all 4 days of racing !
I would still be inputting photos at Christmas !
I had better stop hogging this spot and move on.
Thanks for all your inputs also.
Rod, it was good to see you again mate, that beer is still on me next time.
Bruce, I know you always enjoy a visit to California and I will do my best to meet up with you next time.

Some Formula One machines.

20180819_154837 (1).jpg

1974 March 741-1 # 39 Driven by Martin Lauber
This car has been beautifully restored to as it appeared at the 1974 German Grand Prix and driven then by Hans Stuck.
It was sold later to Sir Nick Williamson to contest the 1976 RAC British Hill-Climb Championship, the former Champion winning at Bouley Bay. For 1977 Roy lane purchased the car and rebuilt it as a hill-climb special, winning at Le Val des Terres, Prescott and Doune. Retired in 1985, 741-1 sat mothballed until 2005 when purchased and restored in California.

DSCN0041.JPG

1977 LEC CRP1 # 52 driven by Ron Maydon.
The unique Mike Pilbeam designed F1 car was built for the brave and unlucky British driver, David Purley, for the 1977 F1 season.
David's father owned the LEC Refrigeration company, hence the name.
